More targeted attacks are getting into the email threads between customers and their suppliers.

Here are a couple quick examples of actual attacks:

  • A customer’s email password is compromised and a forwarding rule is configured in their email account to allow the scammer to see details of a transaction even after the password is reset.  The scammer then uses those forwarded emails to Social Engineer a new account for payment. In the attached case a fake domain name (e.g. google-us.com vs. google.com) similar to the supplier’s was set up hours before emailing a transaction modification request so the email would look more authentic to the customer.  Having details of the transaction from the forwarding email hack greatly increased its believability.

  • In other cases the email header is spoofed so the From line appears to be a coworker requesting a wire transfer however the Reply-To line sends the responds to a different email address.

tampa-it-security-companyThere is a new security alert that you will likely be hearing about in the coming days called ShellShock.  It is just as big as Heartbleed in relation to the number of systems that need to be patched however the threat landscape (systems actually in danger) is smaller because only systems running cgi-bin web-code or ssh are remotely vulnerable.  MAC/Linux laptop users may want to stay away from public wifi until patches are released as there is also potential for DHCP attacks. (CVE-2014-6271 & CVE-2014-7169)

A quick check for customer’s public facing servers is to Google: “filetype:sh inurl:cgi-bin site:<your public DNS domain>”

For example noaa.gov has a lot of patching to do:

Internally you can run these commands from a command shell on your Linux machines to determine if your machines still need patched, and yes MAC OSX is vulnerable.  There are actually two methods to attack this vulnerability and only the first has been patched as of this writing.  (CVE-2014-6271 & CVE-2014-7169)

9.5 times our of 10 the answer is ‘No don’t open that one’!

If you want to check yourself though I recommend saving the file (don’t double click to open it, instead right click to save it) to a special directory called Malware and then running an online checker.

WARNING: As is always the case in security this is not a 100% guarantee. A brand new vulnerability (called a zero-day) may not be recognizable by any AV/Malware detection software. So use common sense as well.

Here is the output for a recent file FAX-646043.zip. This website ran the file against 48 AV/Malware detectors and 5 of them found something.

Although it is common to use the same Domain Registrar company for Domain Name Services it is not required.

There are several DNS Security factors to consider in regard to both your Domain Registrar and Domain Name Service.
1. Make sure your username and password for managing your Domain Registration stays secure. Domain hijacking is a very lucrative business!

2. Don’t use actual people as Administrative and Technical contacts when registering your domain. Real names will be needed when you register your domain but make the contacts aliases such as Company IT Director or Company IT Admin. Besides the possibility that the person may leave the company publishing the actual person’s name to ‘name drop’ is the first step of Social Engineering.

3. Don’t let your Registration expire! Registering your Domain Name for 3 years may seem like a long time but as your IT staff changes and business gets busy the person that originally signed up for the domain may have moved on. This would be a reason to have the administrative and technical contact email addresses that are registered actually be distribution lists within the company so more than one person will receive important emails relating to your domain registration.

4. When defining what Authoritative domain servers will host your domain entries you can use more than one Domain Name Service which will reduce the chance that your website will indirectly sustain a DoS hit when your Domain Name Service provider is under attack. The downside to this is that you have to maintain your DNS Security records in both services. But the odds two different DNS providers go down simultaneously is much less.

OK,  so you have done the legwork and now know what you need to keep in house and what you can leverage the cloud for, but what should go first?  I believe it is safe to say that cloud email is a trusted delivery model at this point.  Well if you are like most organizations email is probably on your list for the cloud as it should.

Well if only the answer was as clear as yes or no. Unfortunately like most things in life there are too many variables for this to be a simple yes or no. I think it is safe to say that most cloud platforms have proven themselves to be stable and are worthy of consideration in the overall IT strategic plan of any organization. However reaching the decision of what to send to the cloud and what not– well that’s a bit harder of a decision.

Leverage the Cloud

Most organizations will leverage the cloud in some fashion and will end up with a hybrid model of cloud and on premise. The methodology on how to develop this is a bit easier than one might think. Every IT organization needs to take a good internal look and ask the question “What are my sacred cows?” Simply said what do I absolutely have to maintain direct control over and what can I put in a different model????

Answering this question is not as simple as defining critical applications. You have to really look at the services you supply your business units and ask hard questions such as:

  • Am I meeting expectations?
  • Am I reacting as quickly as they need me too?
  • Am I sacrificing innovation for arbitrary control?
Is the Cloud an ideal solution for your business?

Once you start having an honest conversation with your business units you will be able to define what you need to maintain and what you need to broker out. Remember the cloud value proposition isn’t just a matter of savings– it is equally about expansion of services and more efficient delivery of those services.
